The children in this room are cared for and educated following the guidance given in the Scottish Executive’s Curriculum for Excellence framework  which aims to enable all children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

 

The Discovery Zone can cater for 32 children between the ages of 3 and 5 years.  This is a large, airy room, which has been organised into clearly defined areas to accomodate different activities appropriate to the development and competence of the children. Areas are divided by the use of low level shelving that reduces distraction and allows them to become engrossed in their activities.

 

The low level shelving also allows items to be displayed within reach so that children can make deliberate choices about what they want to use in their activities. They have access to a range of materials, equipment and toys such as sand, water, paint, jigsaws, games, computers, interactive smartboard, writing materials, puppets, dressing up outfits and more  which helps their creativity and develops their independence.  Equal emphasis is placed on calm areas within the room where children can feel cosy and enjoy a book or have a rest or nap.
